A Mile in Their Shoes

By Friday, we have all settled into the routine at the school, and the students have begun to run to our van when we pull up! Today the school has an assembly at 11am for the students to experience Garifina drumming and dance.

The precious 4-5 year olds in Infant I spent the day learning about numbers and letters! D'Elise was able to help her teacher, Ms. Caliz create the exam that the students will be taking in two weeks.

In the rambunctious Standard III class,  Lisa taught math and language arts.  For math, the students were differentiated into different groups based on the students needs.  For example, one group could not carry in multiplication and another could not keep their numbers in proper place value.  Mr. Yaxcal was surprised that I had the groups working on different assignments.  Each student was able to be successful at their level.  In Language Arts the students are continuing their study on possessive pronouns.  Lisa read the students a story and had them clap once for a pronoun, and clap twice for a possessive pronoun.  After the story, the students constructed their own possessive pronoun sentences.  At the end of the day the students took a quiz based on the parts of flower.  Again, the students tried to cheat off one another.  Mr. Yaxcal said that he could not give a student an F, as they would receive for cheating in the states.  It continually amazes me (Lisa) how similar but different our schools can be.

Break Time! The boys who are always attached to me, wanting to take a picture with my iPhone.
After school, we decided to walk the mile back to the hotel.  The van had previous obligations and we wanted to see how the students and teachers felt walking to and from school everyday.  The walk home was easier than we had thought it would be. We loved every step!

Excited!
